Luck o the Irish
Did you know that Ann Connelly from the Kleine side and Timothy J. Quinlan from the Milner side both migrated to St. Louis from Ireland? So on St. Patrick's Day think of those ancestors who bring us the luck o the Irish!

Grandma's Spaghetti Sauce
I made this the other day and it was like having a bowlful of Grandma and Grandpa visiting when we were young. I suddenly remembered very vividly why I used to have Grandma get me a bowlful to eat like soup or chili. Yum!
Of course Grandma doesn't use recipes, but I have been able to pry a couple out of her. Luckily I cook the way she does; a little of this and a little of that, so I was able to be a bit more specific in my version; hope it helps. It was so yummy and very simple. The pot I made was enough for 2 meals and a bit left over, I have big eaters so make sure you have your storage containers ready and you'll have sauce for a year! Okay, not quite, but it will make a lot.
Grandma's Spaghetti (actual recipe)
1/4 lb hamburger
2 cans tomato paste (dilute with 6 cans water)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 can mushroms
3 Tbsp oilve oil
3 heaping Tbsp sugar
salt/pepper/parmesan grated cheese/oregano/basil/fennel
Cooks at least 2 hours
This is what I did :)
1 lb hamburger
2 cans tomato paste (6 cans water)
1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
2 14 1/2 oz crushed tomatoes
several large garlic cloves, minced
1 large onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
3 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 c sugar
1 c asiago cheese, grated
2 Tbsp italian seasoning
Brown the hamburger adding the onion, green pepper, and garlic after initial sear on the meat. Season with salt and pepper. When vegetables are cooked, add itialian seasoning, sugar, and olive oil. Stir and cook for a couple of minutes to let the dried herbs rehydrate and flavors develop. Add tomato paste with water and crushed tomatoes. Stir well. Cook forever, stiring occasionally, tasting and seasoning with salt and pepper all along the way :)

Pam the Gymnast
Did you know that Grandma Pam (Pam Milner Fisher) did gymnastics growing up? I had no idea until I heard this conversation with Grandma Milner (Pat Milner).

Veterans Day
This Veterans Day took on a whole new meaning for me this year than in years past. In August I was able to go to St. Louis and listen to Grandpa (Virgil Milner) talk about the war and show us all kinds of memorabilia from it. What an amazing respect I now have for the men and women who serve. Especially the men who served in World War II and experienced the things Grandpa experienced!
